What is the recommended potting substrate and fertilizer for Fortunella Hindsii?
I’ve used the same basic soil mix and fertilizer for fortunella and the tree has been responding well. I even have a number of fruit this year (though I typically remove the fruit as I want the tree to grow more).
The soil mix is akadama (30-50%), pumice and lava. For fertilizer I mostly use cottonseed meal and fish emulsion.
They’re a great variety - I’d love to see more!
When would be a good time to transition a Fortunella Hindsii from a nursery potting mix to a bonsai substrate?
Late winter or early spring is a good time to repot - just before the tree starts to grow in spring.
Depending on the age and health of the tree, removing all of the nursery soil at once can be hard on the tree - the alternative is to remove it in stages, maybe 1/2 one year, 1/2 the next.
