Holly Tree = Ilex aquifolium

I was thinking of choosing a Holly Tree for my latest Bonsai subject. However, the common British Holly Tree has rather large leaves.

By cutting the leaves and encouraging new growth, is it likely that I can reduce the size of the new leaves?

I imagine you can get the leaves a bit smaller but I don’t know how small. The bigger challenge may be getting the density and ramification you’re looking for. I haven’t tried, but I haven’t seen many well-developed specimens either. Maybe now’s the time to make one!

One thing people do with varieties that have larger leaves is select larger specimens to work with (in other words, the variety might be better suited for making larger trees instead of small-sized bonsai).
