Repotting Chinese Elm

Acquired this CE, it’s looks healthy. However, it’s not in bonsai soil and the root ball is somewhat loose in the container. I’m in zone 9, can I repot with bonsai soil now as long as I don’t mess with the roots much ?

Anything is possible with the right skill level and aftercare. However, i would not advise it on the basis that the nebari shows a need for fairly extensive work over the next few repotting. I. Think it would be wiser to wait for a more optimal repotting time that would enable you to explore and correct more of the root ball.

It could be the photo, but the foliage looks a bit flat, almost like it’s sunburned (or has mite damage).
