Slash pine (Pinus Elliottii) styling

(Xavier De Lapeyre) #1

This is a slash pine ( Pinus Elliottii ) that I acquired from a fellow bonsaika.
Its previous owner was going into a han-kengai design but got stuck and left the tree in its previous state.
When I took it up I took my time and finally saw another possible design.
Its still rough in my mind but I’m hoping to get an informal upright, or a bunjin.
I’m considering using the lower branch to create a secondary child trunk.

Interesting - this isn’t a variety I’ve worked with. The first thing that comes to mind is that I’d want the tree to be more vigorous before doing any radical cutting or bending. And as there are essentially two foliage blocks - the low branch and the apex - I’d aim for a simple design.

Thanks for the input Jonas,

I am thinking to design something along this line :

Sounds like a good idea - Barlow’s pine looks great.
