Trident maple to do or not to do?

(Rick) #1

I have 10 small trident maple that I have been growing for about a year. I want to make a forest planting. They are about 36 inches tall.
Can I root prune them now to fit into the pot and top them at the same time.
Thanks Rick St Augustine, Fl

Repotting season (possibly now where you live) is the right time to do the necessary rootwork.

Sometimes I find that I need to do initial rootwork one year, let the tree grow a year, and then finish the rootwork the following year. I do this when I can’t cut back to a flat rootbase all at once. If all of the roots come out of the same place when you repot, you can go straight into the pot you use for the forest.
