When and how to dig up a landscape mugo for bonsai?

I have a medium sized mugo that needs to be removed. I want to try to save it for bonsai. When is the best time to dig it out and is there any advice to help make sure it lives?

Thanks in advance

The very best time will be in the spring before the buds begin to swell, one can also transplant in the fall. If doing so in the fall it is best to allow a good six weeks for root recovery before frost. Frost can further affect roots damaged when transplanting.
The spring timing works best because the tree has a longer growth period to recover from the transplant.
