Yamadori wolf willow

(Christopher J Parker) #1

Has anyone ever collected wolf willow (Elaeagnus commutata), I have read it’s difficult?

I haven’t collected them, but would be interested to hear how it goes. Have you worked with the variety before?

Collected one last year with a nice flat root mass. However it became the victim of poor soil and me watching to many Graham Potter videos. Haven’t since been yelled by Walter Pall (via video) to give trees years to settle before major work I’m hoping to avoid the same fate.

Currently I am root and crown pruning in the field, have these methods been successful in your (or anyone’s) experience?

Root and crown pruning can both make sense. One way to think of it is how would you treat the tree if you’d planted it and were developing the trunk in the ground. Some amount of root pruning can help redirect root growth closer to the trunk which will be useful when you dig the tree. Crown pruning can make sense if you want to redirect growth to other areas.
